Graham Potter is beginning to stamp his authority on West Ham — and that includes changes behind the scenes. According to trusted insider ExWHUEmployee, goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero is expected to leave the club at the end of the season.
Valero has been a mainstay at West Ham since 2018, originally brought in by Manuel Pellegrini and somehow surviving the Moyes and Lopetegui eras. But despite being a popular figure at Rush Green and heavily involved in both recruitment and development of the club’s goalkeepers, Potter is reportedly keen to bring in his own man.
“One person whose place at the club is under threat is that of goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero,” Ex revealed via The West Ham Way Patreon. “A departure at the end of the season is expected.”
It’s thought Potter may turn to Ben Roberts, a trusted ally from his Brighton and Chelsea days. Roberts worked closely with Potter and Kyle Macaulay (now Head of Recruitment at West Ham), making him a logical fit for the rebuild.
While Valero is highly regarded across coaching circles, some might argue the Hammers’ recent inconsistency in goal warrants a change — especially with veteran Lukasz Fabianski departing this summer.
A new face in the coaching setup may also coincide with a new signing between the sticks. The club is believed to be in the market for a goalkeeper to challenge Alphonse Areola next season — a decision that could be shaped by the incoming goalkeeping coach.
One thing’s for sure: the Potter era is picking up pace.
