West Ham Target Werder Bremen’s Michael Zetterer Amid Transfer Shuffle and PSR Pressure

West Ham United have identified Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer as a summer transfer target, as the club looks to bolster their goalkeeping options and navigate growing pressure from Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

According to BILD, Zetterer is among several Werder players available for transfer, and the Hammers are monitoring the 29-year-old closely.

The interest comes at a time when West Ham are reportedly willing to part ways with up to four senior players to stay within PSR compliance, with Jean-Clair Todibo named as one potential departure, per Frazer Fletcher of TEAMtalk.

Zetterer Under Watch as West Ham Eye Goalkeeping Reinforcements

With Lukasz Fabianski expected to leave in 2025 and Alphonse Areola enduring a patchy spell last season, West Ham are weighing up options to strengthen their squad between the sticks.

Zetterer, who played every Bundesliga game for Werder Bremen last season and kept ten clean sheets, is now firmly on the club’s radar. FC Copenhagen are also believed to be interested.

The German shot-stopper averaged just over three saves per match, posting a 65% save success rate. However, he also made four errors that led directly to goals, and his ‘goals prevented’ stat of -4.07 suggests there’s room for improvement.

Keeper Situation In Flux as Areola’s Form Raises Questions

Alphonse Areola’s inconsistencies last season make the search for a new number one all the more urgent.

Though the French international featured in 26 Premier League matches, he made several high-profile mistakes and struggled to command the position with authority.

Wes Foderingham has already joined from Sheffield United this summer but has yet to play a competitive game. With Graham Potter looking to refresh the spine of the squad, Zetterer could bring much-needed depth and experience.

Todibo and More: West Ham Open to Selling Players for PSR Relief

TEAMtalk’s Frazer Fletcher reports that up to four players could be sold this summer as West Ham attempt to stay within PSR boundaries.

Jean-Clair Todibo, who sealed a permanent move after his loan stint, is said to be one of those the club might be prepared to offload if a suitable offer comes in.

The Hammers aren’t rushing into any sales, though it’s clear some tough choices may be on the cards as they try to balance squad needs with financial realities.

Zetterer a Sign of West Ham’s Reset under Potter

The pursuit of Michael Zetterer shows West Ham are trying to address key weaknesses without throwing financial plans off track.

Whether or not the Bundesliga keeper ends up at the London Stadium, it’s a clear sign that the goalkeeper role, along with other positions, is under review.

With PSR looming and Graham Potter settling in, West Ham’s summer may see as many outgoings as arrivals… and Zetterer could well be part of a broader reshuffle in east London.
